Chapter 5

When Ghost was seven years old, his maternal grandfather introduced him to a world few in this country would experience firsthand. The wealth, alone, proved unimaginable even by Hollywood standards. A life where a whim for anything and everything was never too much to grant. To most, a veritable Xanadu.

He couldn’t escape quickly enough.

To him, nothing matched the homey comfort Nic’s guesthouse provided. Watching her sleep was a gift he treasured.

She lay curled on her side, dark hair grazing her cheek, lips parted on quiet breaths, one hand held to her heart, the other outstretched to him, her mind and body achieving peace at last. He suspected she hadn’t slept this well since Bryce’s murder.

Lightheaded and longing, he never wanted to leave her side, everything he was and would be kneeling to her. He’d never known a braver or more exquisite woman. Her creamy skin called to the male within him, stiffening his cock. Her strawberry-colored nipples were delightfully tight, the tips erect.

Her lids fluttered.

That’s it, baby, wake up. I don’t want to be alone.

She opened one eye, glanced at his grin, then offered her own. “You’re awake.”

Hard, too. “Yep. For hours.”

Her gaze shot to the windows. The sun had barely budged. They’d been out maybe twenty minutes or so. “You’re a terrible liar.”

“I know.” Elbow on the mattress, he propped his head in his hand and fingered her earring. “I learned as much when I was a kid. No matter what shit rained down, lies never saved my ass. Eventually, I gave up and spoke the truth, no matter how much it hurt me.”

Worry crossed her face. “Your folks were hard on you?”

“Never.” Even after so many years, boundless love welled in him, softening his voice. “My dad was the kindest soul you’d ever know. Never had a bad word for anyone. Mom was even gentler. Not once did she lose her temper. She listened rather than interrupted, explained instead of demanded. They were the best people ever.”

Nic pushed to a sitting position and rested her hand on his. “Were?”

Grief tightened his throat. He cleared it. “When I was six, they died in a car accident a few miles from the reservation. A teenage driver plowed into their pickup. From what the reports said, the kid and his girlfriend had been necking while he barreled down the road. They thought it was a cool thing to do and walked away without a scratch.
